REPORT | Chorley 1 Curzon Ashton 1

Matt Jansen decided to make a number of chances to his front line for this match.  In came Jason Walker and Jake Cottrell for their first starts of the season.  Terry Gornall moved to the number nine spot and Josh Wilson into midfield.  That meant Marcus Carver and Dale Whitham started on the bench for the Magpies.

A great start for the home side almost saw the first goal inside five minutes. Adam Blakeman sent a searching long ball into the box which almost found Walker before Wilson’s point-blank header was knocked away by Cameron Mason’s leg.

But disaster struck on nine minutes as Curzon snatched the opening goal against the run of play.  A ball was sent over the defence and Andy Teague miss-timed his jump.  That allowed Joe Guest to burst through and slot past Urwin from a tight angle.

Seven minutes later Curzon should have grabbed a second but Matt Challinor managed to get his toe to the cross and clear for a corner.  From the corner Matt Urwin pulled off another save from a pot shot at goal.

Scott Bakkor got the better of his marker on 18 minutes, turning on six-pence which allowed him to charge into the Chorley box but his lay-back for Guest's strike was sent wide.

The home side finally grabbed their equaliser on 27 minutes as Teague made amends for his earlier error which led to Curzon’s goal.  Blakeman’s free kick wasn’t dealt with so Teague was able to send another cross over his head and, after a mini scramble, it was Scott Leather’s strike which found the back of the net.

Cottrell then came close to grabbing the lead for the home side on 34 minutes but his curling strike was sent narrowly wide of the goal.

Six minutes before the break Cottrell was the saviour for the Magpies as he raced back towards his goal to kick the ball from under Max Leonard's feet to deny a certain goal.  Leonard had been played in after beating the offside trap from Bakkor’s through ball, knocked the ball past the onrushing Urwin and faced an open net.

The second half started fairly even but a decent cross from Challoner almost found Cottrell running into the Curzon box but he gave away a free kick for a foul on the Mason whilst challenging for the ball.

Chorley won a host of free kicks on the left side and another delivery from Blakeman was diverted over the bar before Curzon countered and Paul Marshall shot over for the visitors.

Curzon enjoyed a spell where they created a number of opportunities but couldn’t convert those to chances and it was Chorley’s Carver could only win a corner.

The Magpies carried on dominating this game for lengthy periods but couldn’t find that killer move that would lead to a second goal.  On 77 minutes Matt Challoner curved his strike over the bar from Blakeman's corner before the ball bounced off the top of Mason’s crossbar five minutes later.

Chorley then had a big shout for a hand ball as the game entered stoppage time but the referee only gave a corner and that second goal remained elusive as the game ended 1-1.
