REACTION | Boston United 2 Chorley 0

It’s back to basics for the Magpies this week after they came away from the Jakemans Stadium with a third defeat of the season on Saturday from just five games, this time going down by two goals to nil to Boston United.  And Matt Jansen had only one word to describe it – frustration.

When speaking to the media team after the match he continued by saying that much of the things that his side prided themselves on last season weren’t there.  “There were sloppy passes and poor defence” Matt added.  “They scored from us not closing the ball down and they caused us problems with one long straight ball and scored from a long throw in.  I don’t mind if they win the first header but then the ball bounced in front of the keeper and they were able to tap it in.  Those little things that we were so solid at and so strong at last season were missing.”

Jansen pointed to the fact that he was forced to make changes early on which didn’t help his side’s cause, but he felt that they should still have had enough experience to deal with that.  “Scott was struggling before the game with his chest so we were forced into an early sub because of that, not because of his booking, and that meant we had to go to four at the back so early on.

“Stevie Jordan is still injured so we didn’t have a like-for-like substitute to bring on.  But that doesn’t stop you being professional and sticking together and organising yourselves so that’s the most disappointing thing for me.”

Jansen was confident that the old team spirit is in there somewhere but added “they’re maybe taking things for granted a little bit too much - thinking that they’ll walk over teams this season and it’s not like that.

“It wasn’t like that last season and we prided ourselves on our team and our dressing room and from that we got belief because we were winning games and because of that we were working hard.

“We know we’ve got the ability in there but ability is not good enough if you’re not a team together working professionally, working hard and getting results.  Those all breed belief and positivity.”

On new signing Matty Hughes, Jansen confirmed it was a difficult situation for him to come into and once he’s settled in we will see the player his is capable of being.  “We were knocking long balls to him and he was feeding off scraps at times.  He’s a tidy player though and he’s proven at this level so time will tell and hopefully he can do well for us.”

Jansen didn’t make any excuses for Chorley’s early season struggle based on the fixtures they have been dealt early on, saying the league has stepped up again this season.  “The league is stronger again and maybe teams have been able to strengthen more so than we have been able to financially.  But that doesn’t mean that we don’t compete and we didn’t compete well enough against Boston.

He added: “Having said that, the teams that we’ve played and the exact same fixtures with these five teams last season we also gained four points from.  So we’ve done exactly what we did last season.

“I suppose you can put a positive into that but I can’t take anything positive from Saturday’s result.  I’m frustrated, angry, disappointed and we have to look at ourselves, put it behind us through the week and get back to basics.”
