REACTION | Jansen full of praise after outstanding victory

Matt Jansen was full of praise for his side after they recorded a 2-0 win over relegated York City yesterday at the Chorley Group Victory Park Stadium.  When he spoke to the media after the game he summed up the performance in three simple words: “It was fantastic.”

Jansen put it down to going back to basics and over the last few games which means his side are beginning to look like the Chorley side of old.  He said: “we had a game plan and we said from the start at Brackley that we were going to go back to how we were last season.  We kept a clean sheet at Brackley, maybe could have nicked it.  We played against Bradford Park Avenue and they were wasting time and we should have won that game but it was another clean sheet.  But the happiest thing for me today was that we kept another clean sheet.  Obviously I’m happy that we got the three points and we were a bit more adventurous.”

Looking forward Jansen is pleased that his side has returned to winning ways.  “We’re going to be difficult to beat and we also want to be a little bit more attractive and a bit more exciting up front, which was the only thing that was lacking in the last three, four or five games.  I don’t think anybody can grumble that we didn’t create chances and didn’t cause them endless problems and it was a great performance.”

A change in tactics proved to be the catalyst for the way for this side performed against York and he added: “we didn’t play with a holding midfielder; we played with a number 10 in Nick Haughton who has just joined us from Fleetwood.  He was outstanding today and created endless opportunities for our strikers.  And it proved dividends in the end as Josh Wilson scored a couple of goals and we won 2-0 against a very strong side.”

Despite this restult, Jansen still feels York will have a big say in how the league ends later in the season.  “York City are a good team.  They’ve got ex-Football League players playing for them and they caused problems in the Premier Division and they’ve caused problems in this division and they will do so all through the season.  And I guess they’ll be up there and in the mix for a play-off place.

“Yes they got relegated last season from the Conference Premier but they won the FA Trophy and they’ve started the season reasonably well, but to come here and for us to put on a performance like we did today was outstanding.”

Jansen now feels the performances in the last few games are ones they can build on.  “The lads were buzzing in the dressing room after the Brackley game and I wanted to build on that.  So we took it to Bradford and we built on it and we’ve took it into this game and built on it again.  We’ve got a more attacking way of playing and a more defensive way of playing and if you don’t concede goals you don’t lose games and if you nick a goal, you win games.

The lads will be confident of making it two home wins on the bounce when they welcome Darlington to Victory Park on Tuesday night.
