MATCH REPORT | Magpies Book Place in Semis

The Magpies reached the semi-finals of the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy for the fifth season in a row with a hard fought 2-1 victory at Bamber Bridge.

Nick Haughton’s stoppage time strike sealed Chorley’s passage to the final four after an enthralling game that looked destined for penalties, despite the hosts playing the last 39 minutes with ten men.

Before the early drama of the second half the first 45 minutes ambled along at a steady pace with both teams enjoying possession, if not many goal-scoring chances. In fact neither keeper was tested fully until Brig took the lead on 34 minutes, as Alistair Waddecar took advantage of a deflection following an innocuous-looking pass to beat Matt Urwin with a snap shot.

Within a minute Chorley were level through Matty Hughes, who slammed home from close range following an Adam Roscoe knock down. Waqas Azam provided the cross for Chorley’s makeshift number nine, who made his presence felt to good effect.

The same couldn’t be said for Brig’s target man Brad Carsley, whose second half lasted just six minutes. Urwin dwelt on a back pass and paid the price as Carsley collided with the Magpies’ stopper on the edge of the area. The referee didn’t hesitate in issuing a red card, much to the ire of the home crowd.

Despite the numerical advantage Matt Jansen’s side struggled to produce many meaningful efforts on goal. Urwin was forced into a full length save from Dan Mooney, before sub Jamie Milligan clipped the bar with a curling free kick, as Brig looked the more likely to break the tie. However, just as penalties appeared certain, Azam and Roscoe combined again to tee up an unmarked Haughton in the box, and Chorley’s top scorer did the rest to send his team through to a New Year’s date in Leyland.
