BREAKING NEWS | Azam leaves the Magpies

It can be announced that young defender Waqas Azam is leaving Chorley FC to join Evo-Stik Division One North side Colne on a permanent basis.

Azam has been with the Magpies for 18 months, after joining the club in the summer of 2016 following a successful trial during pre season.

On his departure, first team manager Matt Jansen said, “I’m sad to see Waqas leave as he is a lad with massive potential. Unfortunately for him, Matt Challoner is playing so consistently and staying injury free, it’s been difficult to get Waqas in. He is still a young lad and will develop into an even better player than he is now, but he will only be able to do that by playing football which sadly means us letting him move on. He goes with all our best wishes for the future.”

Everyone at Chorley would like to thank Waqas for his time at the club and wish him the very best for his future.

Sam Ashton makes return from injury

It was a night to remember last night at the Chorley Group Victory Park Stadium. Not only did our young Magpies go to the top of the Galaxy Lancashire League with a 3-1 win over Lancaster City Reserves, but Sam Ashton made his long awaited return from injury.

The 31-year-old has been out since the middle of last season with a serious leg injury. But thanks to help from Chorley club doctor David Rhodes and sheer determination from Ashton, he managed the first 45 minutes of action last night, before being substituted at half time by Charlie Whittingham.

On Ashton’s return, Chorley assistant manager Jamie Vermiglio said, “We were absolutely gutted to lose Sam last year and I’m confident in saying if we had him all last season we would’ve accumulated more points.”

“Sam is what Chorley FC is all about - honest, hard working and determined and he’s shown a desire and a resilience to get back. He’s managed to do this despite it being a really busy time in his life, having recently married and looking to start a family.”

Vermo continued, “Sam knows that we welcome challenge for the number one jersey and if Matty Urwin doesn’t know it just yet, he will soon realise that Sam will be pushing him for a starting place.”

“Credit must also be given to Dr Rhodes, who has facilitated treatment and kept Sam on track. Sam is not fully fit by any means yet. We are looking at another few months for him to build his fitness back up, but this a massive achievement for him.”

On his return to action last night, Ashton said he felt brilliant to be playing once again and couldn’t wait to continue building his fitness to get back into action regularly.
