Chorley 2-1 Ashton United 26/09/2009

Saturday September 26th, 3pm
FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round

Chorley turn the league tables on their heads to knock out Ashton United who were second in the Premier Division compared to the mid-table First Division North Magpies.

The first chance of the game fell to the visitors, when their left winger cut in from the line, passed three defenders with ease, only to fire wide.  Had this gone in the game would have been much more different, as from this, Chorley hit Ashton on the break, Chris Amadi flew down the right wing, fired in an exocet like cross to Terry Fearns, who smashed his volley past the keeper in the ninth minute.

Five minutes later is was almost two to Fearns, but his powerful drive was palmed to safety.

As the half wore on Ashton inevitably worked their way back into the match, and after two chances to score leading up to half time, former Accrington Stanley winger Matty O'Neill flicked home a left wing free kick, leaving Zac Hibbert rooted to the spot to level the score.

The visitors had the better of the open exchanges of the second half and Hibbert had to be at his best to punch clear a free kick; then Amadi came close with an effort from 20 yards.

The winning goal was created by many peoples man of the match, Chris Amadi.

For how many years have supporters berated the team for taking quick, short corners?  Well this time, at long last for once it worked!  Amadi, who won the corner, received it short from Reece Kelly, turned and swerved past two defenders before crossing for Fearns, who managed to nod the ball in despite the best efforts of the keeper to keep it out.

Hibbert ensured the win in injury time with a save Gordon Banks would have been proud of as the Magpies made it to the third qualifying round for only the second time this century, taking our winnings this season to a not too small £9,000, with a further £7,500 awaiting us on October 10th!
