CHORLEY kicked-off the 2010/11 season in style with a performance to savour with six goals and a debut hat-trick to treat a bumper attendance – the second highest on the day in the entire Evo-Stik League.
With ten players starting the game making their competitive debuts and with arguably the three leading strikers absent through injury or suspension, many would have expected the side to take time to gel. But right from the kick-off the Magpies were on top, but solid defending and perhaps a few nerves from a team ranked as 3rd favourites by the bookies for the title, meant the home supporters had to wait until close to half time for the deadlock to be broken.
Shelton Payne was the stand out player in the early exchanges, ripping through the Steelmen’s defence time and again. The closest the home side came to opening the scoring was a Matt Jansen free-kick that curled just wide on the half hour mark.
The sides then exchanged yellow cards, with Steve Flitcroft the Magpies recipient, before the goals began to flow.
On thirty eight minutes, the opening corner of the game was swung in by Tom Ince, and with Mark Ross and Dale Whitham challenging for the ball, Whitham bundled the ball over the line.
This goal appeared to settle the team down and minutes later Ince received the ball from Payne who had sped through the centre from the half way line, but his cross aimed for Jack Dorney was cut out.
With the half coming to a close, a ricocheting ball landed at the feet of Jack Dorney, but was he moved forward he was tumbled to the ground. He dusted himself down and calmly slotted home for the second.
The game was as good as won just two minutes into the second period when a quick thinking Jansen took a quick through to Payne. The visiting defence was caught on their heels as he spead into the box and squared to Whitham. Unfortunately Dale couldn’t turn to get a shot off so he teed up Ince who finished at the second attempt.
Six minutes later it was four! Payne again was involved, this time crossing form the left flank for Dorney to slot home his second of the game.
After this Jansen and Payne both had attempts, one blocked and the other just over, then a flurry of substitutes were made with an eye on Monday nights trip to Curzon Ashton.
Eight minutes from time the first Evo-Stik hat-trick of the season was completed when Dorney fired home a spot kick into the top left corner following a foul on Ince to make it five. Indeed Dorney could have had four, but he unselfishly squared to Payne when through, only for the ball to be cleared.
The rout was completed in injury time when Ince, making amends for an avoidable yellow card minutes earlier for handball, made it six.
So the standard has been set by Garry’s team for the coming season... Only 43 games to go!
