League Presidents' Cup
Tonight was definitely a case of after Lord Mayor’s show, as following Saturday’s heroics in Chester the much changed Magpies line-up failed to make an impact at the Giant Axe.
Just Jamie Vermiglio and the two Tom’s, Walker and Ince, survived Garry Flitcroft’s changes from Saturday starting eleven for this Presidents Cup tie against a side managed by former Chorley boss Tony Hesketh.
City had the better of the chances in the first half and took the lead on 36 minutes when Jerome Watt capitalised on some slack defending during a spell where the hosts dominated.
On 41 minutes the post was struck, and a minute later the lead was doubled when Alex Johnson nodded in a free-header.
Jordan Stepien making his injury delayed debut almost reduced the deficit in the final minute of the half, he couldn’t quite get onto the end of a Vermiglio cross.
Into the second half and City went close early on as the Magpies continued to look disjointed. The introduction of Jack Dorney and Mark Houghton brought impetus to the Magpies play much to the delight of around 80 travelling supporters, but the effect came too late as Steve Burkes goal, as volley from a Jonatham Smith knockdown, arrived with the final kick of the game.
At least we have one less distraction as we concentrate on the league!
