Monday August 30th
CHORLEY put their FA Cup defeat behind them with a scintillating performance infront of a bumper crowd of 784.
Right from the off it was the Magpies in control and the opening goal came after just ten minutes when Shelton Payne’s pace took him clear down the right flank, and his cross took a slight deflection and sailed into the Borough goal.
Eight minutes later it was two-nil. Tom Ince was fouled inside the area and it was down to goal machine Jack Dorney to dispatch the spot kick for his ninth goal and fifth penalty in a little over three games.
The best of the other Chorley chances in the opening period saw Dorney head a Mark Houghton cross against the bar and an improvised over the shoulder shot from Ince went narrowly wide.
After the restart it was more of the same as Chorley dominated possession. Payne floated in a fantastic effort from 30 yards, but the goal was cruelly disallowed for offside.
The third goal arrived on the hour mark when Payne’s pace was too much for the visiting defence and Dorney slammed home another penalty to take him into double figures in just four games.
Bottom club Radcliffe then had a brief spell on top and bagged a goal when a free-kick from 30 yards deflected of Andy Russell, and despite Aaron Grundy’s best effort to readjust himself the ball crept into the goal, but their brief spell soon ended and the three goal cushion was returned.
Steve Burke had the simplest of tap-ins following a mazey dribble by Downey, who twisted and turned his way across the face of goal; without getting a clear shot at goal he squared to Burke who slotted home.
Substitue Jamie Vermiglio and Burke both had headed chance, their efforts going over and being saved respectively.
This result combined with FA Cup replays elsewhere means the Magpies moved two points clear at the top of the league table after just three games. Next match, Tuesday September 7th when Prescot Cables visit Victory Park.
