League Challenge Cup 1st Round
Chorley progressed to the next round of the League Challenge Cup with a victory that was more comfortable than the score line might suggest.
Even though there were six changes to the starting line-up from Saturday’s Trophy victory over Quorn, the Magpies took the game to their neighbours from the off with a good move resulting in a Jack Dorney cross almost being turned in by Brig’s big number 2, Danny Meadowcroft.
The hosts were dangerous on the break, but stand-in keeper Dean Porter was on top form to deny all that was thrown at him.
Dorney shot just over from a Jordan Stepien cross and Dale Whitham shot from distance without troubling Ben Hinchcliffe, then Whitham again had a go at goal, but this time the keeper blocked and Tom Walker following up saw his effort tipped over.
Porter then denied the hosts again before the first talking point of the game on 37 minutes.
Following a foul on Walker, the referee initially waved advantage, but was Walker played a peach of a through ball to Stepien, who was through on goal the ref inexplicable decided to pull the game back for a Chorley free kick when continuing the advantage was by far the better option, and of course the dead ball situation came to nothing.
Dorney then dragged a shot wide before being felled on the edge of the box – queue the second moment of questionable refereeing! Dorney standing over the ball appeared to take the free kick a split second before the referee whistled and the balled beat Hinchcliffe with the aid of a deflection. Despite the best attempts by the home side to persuade the referee to change the decision the goal stood.
Into the second half, and the Magpie controlled the ball for long spells but couldn’t find the killer goal, yet Brig were still dangerous on the occasional counter attack.
Dorney was a constant thorn in the home teams side, and Matt Jansen on as a substitute came closest with a header that came back off the bar.
Steve Burke never stopped running all night and his hard work will surely be rewarded with a goal soon.
