The Manager of the Month curse struck at Victory Park to provide Garry Flitcroft with heap birthday blues on the Magpies boss.
All go things come to an end, but not many would have predicted our first defeat would come at the hand of bottom placed Harrogate Railway Athletic, even though they were unbeaten in their previous four league and cup games.
The game got off to a great start when striker Aaron Rey grabbed his first goal since signing and the clubs fiftieth goal of the season, heading home a right wing cross.
Chorley them dominated possession without carving open a clear cut chance, but as the half wore on, the visitors began to fight their way back into the match.
An early change in the second half, with Shelton Payne replacing Jack Dorney, brought pace to the attack, but few goal scoring opportunities can the way of the Magpies and as the clock ticked by the Railwaymen began to pick up steam and take control of the midfield and deservedly won the match with two strikes in four minutes.
While the equaliser might have had a hint of good fortune, the winning goal was good piece of individual flair. Steve Palfrey levelled the score when he capitalised on a rebound in the box and there was also received a favourable decision from the referee’s assistant when other may have given offside.
The winner came when Paul Stansfield picked up the ball. He was allowed to run unchallenged toward goal before smashing a shot just inside the near post, giving Aaron Grundy no chance.
Despite the introductions of Matt Jansen and Jonathan Smith into the attack, the was no way back into the game for the hosts. Elsewhere, Chester took full advantage of our misfortune, winning 3-0 at home to Mossley, opening up a four point lead at the top of the table.
