Marine 2-2 Chorley 09/11/10

Tuesday November 9th
LFA Challenge Trophy, 2nd Round

In a tough opening half, the Magpies lost a goal and a player as Neil Harvey opened the scoring on 22 minutes to put the hosts in front and experienced defender Jonathan Smith saw red for the Magpies just after the half hour for a professional foul. Andy Russell came off the bench, replacing the unlucky Steve Burke, to compensate for Smith’s departure.

After the interval, the ten man Magpies picked up a gear and on the hour mark Shelton Payne fired home from the spot, the clubs tenth penalty goal of the season, as the hosts were also reduced to ten men.

Just four minutes after the equaliser a Dale Whitham looping header put Chorley in front but Marine struck back ten minutes from time to level at two-all – potentially ten minutes from a penalty shootout as there is no extra time in this competition.

With time running out the final chance of the game came to Payne, but hit shot cleared the bar... so to penalties!

Marine go first, and all goals are converted in the opening eight with Shelton Payne, Jordan Stepien, Tom Walker and Nathan Fairhurst scoring for the Magpies.

Then Marine keeper Ryan McMahon fancied his chances from the spot, but Dean Porter denied his opposite number and Tom Ince fired home the fifth to end the shoot our and send the Magpies into the Quarter Finals.
