Chorley 1-0 Radcliffe Borough 18/01/11

Tuesday January 18th
League Cup, 3rd Round

The Magpies progressed to the fourth round of the league cup thanks to a Shelton Payne goal that went in direct from a corner fifteen minutes from time.

Garry stuck to his principles and selected many of the squad players who, despite not featuring often in the league, have all stayed loyal to the club and each have played key roles in this and the Lancashire Co-operative Challenge Trophy.

Jordan Stepien fired the first chance of the game across the face of the goal, then at the other end Borough captain Mark Jones forced a good save from Lloyd Rigby.

A Lee Woodyatt throw put Steve Burke through the defence, and the striker unselfishly crossed to Jack Dorney, but the ball was cleared off his toe.

Shelton Payne was dropped in the box, but the referee waived away all claims, then played on again following an innocuous looking foul on Nick Meace which resulted him being replaced by debutant Josh Apps.

Another debutant, Jerome Fitzgerald, look accomplished at the back, give the Boro frontline very little time and space, and looks a good addition to the squad, even if it is only for a short period.

Just before the interval Burke headed a glorious chance wide from an Apps cross, with Stepien picking up the pieces and shooting narrowly over the angle, and the final kick of the half fell to Nathan Fairhurst, confident following his strike at Southport last week, tried his luck, but picked out the same pocket of air as Stepien earlier effort!

Into the second half and Dorney went on a mazy dribble through the heart of the defence, but lost the ball at the final second.

Payne then hit on the counter attack, but his shot was blocked. At the other end Woodyatt had to be alert to cut out a cross the raced across the face of the goal.

Stepien fired over from a tight angle, then fired a shot across the face of the goal after hard work by Burke winning the ball.

A Dorney shot was turned wide to create the corner for Payne to score from; his in swinger just crossing the line before being headed clear – a good spot from the linesman – who needs goal line technology!!!

Jonathan Smith then flung himself at the ball a couple of time to close out the Borough attack, one of this blocked being a goal line clearance.

Chorley’s last chance fell to Tom Ince, but his angled drive went narrowly wide, then at the other end in stoppage time, Boro keeper Nick Culkin, who had been a great sport by bantering with the Chorley supporters all night, went forward for a couple of corners, but despite him throwing his large frame at the ball, it is Chorley who now face Colwyn Bay in the next round.
