Tuesday March 15th
Lancaster City pushed the Magpies all the way, but an 84th minute goal from a rejuvenated Jamie Vermiglio edged the home side to a sixth league double of the season.
The game started brightly with the Magpies well on top.
Steve Foster and John Cunliffe were linking up well and on 13 minutes Foster broke clear of the defence on the left and crossed for Cunliffe, but the striker volley narrowly wide.
However, a minute later Cunliffe made amends when he turned his marker inside out and slotted the ball beyond the visiting keeper Martin Fearon.
Tom Ince then force a smart save from Fearon and Andy Russell went close when first he saw a header cleared off the line, then volleyed the clearance just over the bar form six yards.
It took Lancaster until the half hour mark to test the home defence, but Russell blocked the shot, and this signalled the time for Lancaster to take control of the game.
Lloyd Rigby, back in goal, held a pacey free-kick and made a smart save either side of City missing an absolute sitter when the striker was through on goal shot high and wide even though he looked suspiciously offside, no flag was forthcoming.
The second half saw Shelton Payne on for Cunliffe, but City still had the upper hand.
Five minutes in Rigby mishandled a deep ball but the visiting strike force somehow managed to miss another glorious opportunity; two minutes later the Magpies had another let off when yet again poor finished let City down then on thirteen minutes Rigby had to race to the edge of his area to block a one-on-one opportunity.
With 65 minutes gone Garry Flitcroft brought on Jerome Fitzgerald for Ince, bolstering the midfield and switched Payne from striker to left winger, and this moved paid dividends as City were no longer dominated the midfield battle.
Fitzgerald almost became a super-sub when he found himself through on goal, but could get the ball from under his feet and was forced wide.
Steve Flitcroft blasted narrowly wide from distance minutes before being replaced for Jack Dorney, then Vermiglio saw a a drive blocked when it looked set to sail in.
Now Foster was a lone striker he found opportunities for a clear shot on goal diminishing.
With the clock ticking the Magpies started to put the visitors under more pressure and with six-to-go a Fitzgerald long throw into the box was nodded on by ex-City skipper Andy Teague and Vermiglio bravely nodded in from close range to complete up a rare double over City and move the Magpies back up to second place, nine points behind leader Chester.
