Chorley 0-1 Trafford 22/03/2010

Tuesday March 22nd

Chorley lost ground in the chase of Chester with a single goal defeat to a Trafford side that was much improved from the one we beat four-nil a little over five weeks ago.

The first half saw the Magpies having the better of the possession, but clear cut chances were at a premium, with Steve Foster, Tom Ince and Dale Whitham all having chances, with Ince and Whitham forcing save from the keeper Greg Hall.

Trafford only managed to cross the half way line on a couple of occasions and had the ball in the net once, but play was pulled back following an offside flag, and on the other Lloyd Rigby made a routine save following a 20 yards shot.

The second half kicked off with Jack Dorney on for Jerome Fitzgerald.

A minute into the half Magpies ‘keeper Rigby required extensive treatment on a calf injury, then with five minutes gone Jamie Vermglio had to be withdrawn due to injury, with Steve Flitcroft replacing him.

This enforced change the dynamic of the game and Trafford started to claw their way back into the match and the Magpies were no longer dominant in possession from here on in.

The winning goal was fired home from close range on 66 minutes when Joe Shaw side footed home a knockdown following a free-kick into the box.

Trafford then defended in numbers for the remainder of the game, battling for every ball and hitting on the break, while the Magpies, try as they might, couldn’t find a way through the wall of yellow and resorted or more and more long balls into the box without success.

The first and only clear chance of an equaliser came and went when following excellent football and a peach of a cross from Whitham on the right flank, Foster volleyed narrowly over.

Elsewhere both AFC Fylde and Skelmersdale United fought back from being behind to win their games against Lancaster City and Leigh Genesis respectively while Curzon Ashton were held to a one-all draw at Durham City.
