It might be early days, but Chorley are top of the league thanks to six of the best against Frickley Athletic, which included a first half hat-trick for Steve Foster.
The Magpies survived an early scare when Frickley were awarded a third minute penalty for apparently holding in the area, although none of the visiting squad appealed! The spot kick smashed off the cross bar and no doubt everyone associated with the Yorkshire club will have asked themselves “what if”?
After this early scare Chorley took total control of the game, played out in front of a healthy Tuesday night crowd of 693.
Just before the quarter-hour mark Shelton Payne sprinted into the area, only to be dragged down by the visiting keeper Adam Billard. Steve Foster made it two successful conversions in two games from the spot.
Just four minutes later the lead was doubled when Andy Russell nodded home from close range following a pint point cross from Adam Roscoe.
On the half hour mark it was three when Foster netted his second, slotting past the hapless Billard and then just seconds before the interval the hat-trick was completed.
Tom Ince and Shelton Payne combined on the left, with Payne the swinging in a cross to Foster, who rose like a salmon to nod home from eight yards.
It took thirty second half minutes before the fifth arrived, and by this time Foster, Denham & Jamie Vermiglio had been replaced with Tom Williams, Lee McEvilly and ex-Preston North End winger Simon Whaley, who was marking his Magpies debut with two assists.
First of all Whaley played a superb defence splitting ball to Payne, who then rounded the keeper for the fifth, then for the sixth McEvilly netted his opening for the club, controlling a Whaley cross to then slam the ball home.
