FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round Replay
FOR the second season running the Magpies crashed out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle.
Conceding in the 88th minute, there was little time of Chorley to make a comeback, but over the 180 minutes of action Fylde perhaps just shaded the contest.
In the first game on Saturday the Coasters were the better side although the Chorley rear-guard were up to the challenge. Then in the first 45 minutes in the replay it was the Magpies who completely dominated and should have scored on numerous occasions, with Andy Russell the unluckiest of them all. The last 45 minutes was edged by Fylde and saw them through to the next round where they’ll entertain Gainsborough Trinity of the Blue Square North.
Russell had the first chance of tha game on five minutes when it took a combination of the goalkeeper, a defender and the woodwork to keep the ball out, then shortly after Lee McEvilly saw a rasping shot blocked.
Russell was then put through on goal by a combination of Adam Roscoe and McEvilly, but his chipped attempt just cleared the bar.
It wasn’t all one-way traffic and Russell Saunders made a brave save at the feet of a Fylde striker.
Simon Whaley whipped in a cross at pace, but McEvilly’s deft touch was perhaps too deft was the ball shot just beyond the far post from an acute angle, then Dale Whitham headed narrowly wide from another Whaley cross.
In the final minutes of the half McEvilly was denied twice and Russell saw a goal bound effort flicked away buy the flailing boot of Fylde keeper Danny McDonald as he flung everything at the ball.
After the break the game appeared to carry as we left off with Tom Walker rifling in a shot the skimmed the crossbar, then McEvilly turned the defence only for McDonald to save well.
The match then began to turn and it became the Saunders show as he pulled of numerous fantastic saved to deny the resurgent Fylde attack, the first being an agile double save then one for the camera with a full stretch tip-over.
Substitute Tom Williams chased down a rebound off the keeper but couldn’t keep his shot down as the Magpies last clear chance went begged.
Two minutes from time the game was won as Chorley-born Michael Barnes crossed and Lee Thorp slammed home in similar style to Jack Dorney’s winner in last season’s play-off final!
