Northwich Victoria 1-3 Chorley - 22/11/2011

Tuesday November 22nd, 7.45pm
League

Chorley recorded and emphatic away win against league leaders Northwich Victoria to get their promotion challenge back on track with goal from Steve Foster, Adam Roscoe and Chris Denham capping the performance with a superb strike.

Without a goal in their last three games, even the most loyal supporter would have struggled to predict this result, but from the first minute to the last the Magpies harried their hosts and defended resolutely when called upon.

Apart from the penalty in the last minute Russell Saunders had a single save to make all night, smothering a shot at his near post; the defence protected him throughout and as usual he dealt with all balls into the box with confidence.

At the other end it was a different story with the Magpies attack never giving the Vics defence a chance to settle, closing them down throughout and the midfield four took control of the game.
The opening goal came as a result of a long throw from Mark Ross. Following a brief spell of head tennis, the ball dropped nicely for ace striker Foster to volley in his tenth league goal of the season from 8 yards.

The lead was doubled with right back Ally Brown, playing on the left, stormed through the Vics defence, and despite his best attempts to turn inside to get the ball onto his stronger foot he ended up sending in a perfect left peg cross which Roscoe touched home from close range.

The Vics came out for the second half fighting, but failed to put any real pressure onto Saunders goal other than the earlier mentions near post attempt.

The game was as good as won when Denham picked up the ball 25 yards from goal after both Roscoe and Dale Whitham had attempts blocked, and he unleashed an unstoppable rocket into the top of the goal to send the 150 plus travelling supporters wild as many of the home fans began to look for an early exit.

With just second on the clock Northwich were awarded a penalty for handball, a somewhat harsh as it looked more ball to hand! Ex-Magpie Kyle Armstrong converted the spot-kick to muted cheers from the few home fans still in the ground.

After the recent run of less than perfect results, this victory over the league leaders brings a welcome boost and hopefully the team will maintain this level of performance throughout the second half of the season.
