Lancashire Co-operative Challenge Trophy Semi-Final
@ The County Ground, Leyland
CHORLEY cruised to victory over a plucky Wigan Robin Park and earned a final appearance at the Reebok Stadium on March 12th.
Who will be in opposition will be decided in the second Semi-Final next week, when Kendal Town face Radcliffe Borough at Thurston Road, but whoever we face the Magpies will go into the showpiece final full of confidence having netted sixteen time in three games in this competition so face, conceding just the one.
From the off Chorley were in control, using their experience to retain possession for long periods and it took just seven minutes for the deadlock to be broken.
Matt Walwyn, in probably his best performance in Black & White, darted down the left flank before shooting. His blocked shot landing in the middle of the penalty area and Adam Roscoe was first to the ball, rifling it into the net leaving Jay Foulds no chance.
Chris Denham, who was unlucky not to make the scorecard, was an ever present threat, shot over on 18 minutes. Two minutes later though his strike partner Steve Foster headed home a pin point Ally Brown free-kick.
Denham than went down in the area, but his lone appeal for a penalty was turned down
Ten minutes before the break a crucial third was scored and what a goal it was. Walwyn picked the ball up on the halfway line then advanced forward. With the Wigan defence back-pedaling he let rip with an unstoppable shot 35 yards which screamed into the top of the net.
Dean Porter was called into action for the first time minutes before the interval, making a routine save from a corner as Wigan looked for a way back into the game.
With the hard work done the second half was a somewhat low-key affair with Garry Flitcroft’s team doing what was needed to ensure victory.
Denham had saw two early efforts go wide before the first of the three substitutions were made.
Jordan Bowen, John Cunliffe and Ahmadi Proya all entered the action, replacing Jamie Vermiglio, Foster and Denham.
With quarter of an hour remaining Cunliffe added the fourth after beating the offside trap and slotted expertly into the far corner then with the final whistle closing in the rout was complete when Walwyn headed in a perfect centre from Bowen on the right flank.
