CHORLEY moved up to second place in the league, our highest position in the league since early October, with a hard earned win over a stubborn Matlock Town.
With cold conditions and a heavy pitch the chances of a ‘game of the season’ were slim, and to be honest this isn’t a game that will stay in the memory for too long.
Tom Ince blasted a shot at goal following smart place from Matt Walwyn, but his effort was cleared, then with just seconds to go to the interval Andy Russell was extremely unlucky when he diverted an Ince free kick just the wrong side of the upright.
The interval gave the two managers, Garry Flitcroft and the man he replaced in the Ewood Park midfield Mark Atkins, the opportunity to fire their teams up and it was the Magpies boss who managed to get more out of his team in the second period.
Chris Denham saw an effort go narrowly wide when it look easier to score, then Russell saw his second chance of the game go begging, this time he spooned the ball over the bar from close range.
Walwyn did put the ball into the onion bag, but the referee chalked off his effort due to an Ince handball.
Jamie Vermiglio, who was celebrating the birth of his son Sam Jamie this week, was immense in midfield and nearly capped the perfect week with a great goal, but his strike from distance went wide of the angle.
Flitcroft replaced Denham with top scorer Steve Foster with just over quarter of an hour to go, and almost immediate Foster was on target.
The referee rejected claims for handball on the edge of the box, but as the move progresses Walwyn was bundled over somewhat clumsily and the referee this time has no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Foster, who missed a spot kick in the last match against Stafford Rangers made no mistake this time, riffling the ball into the roof of the net.
Ince shot over the bar, then with the last chance of the game Tom Williams miskicked in front of goal on his return from injury.
At the over then Russell Saunders might as well have brought his coat onto the pitch he had that little to do!
