Chorley 1-0 Mickleover Sports - 03/03/2012

Saturday March 3rd, 3pm

It might not have been pretty football, but a win is a win. A fifteenth clean sheet of the season and Steve Fosters 20th goal of the campaign ensured the Magpies returned to winning ways.

On paper the league table showed it was fourth top verses fourth bottom in the division, but football isn’t played on paper and Mickleover were not here to gift Chorley the points.

The visitors had the better possession in the early stages of the game, but Russell Saunders was on excellent form commanding his area throughout.

At the other end of the pitch Chris Denham was at the centre of all Chorley’s creative play. Once the Magpies gained their composure they had two great chances to take the lead with Denham crafting both chances.

On 21 minutes following a flowing move Denham was unlucky to see he side-footed effort rebound off the foot of the post, and could only watch as Matt Walwyn skied the rebound. Then with ten minutes to the interval Denhams quick footwork created an opening for Walwyn, but the winger was off-balance as he shot over.

Walwyn then tried to recreate his strike at Leyland in the Lancashire Trophy semi-final, but is drive from 20 yards didn’t test the visiting keeper Damien Clarke.

After the interval it was Denham again a the heart of the action and this time it was top scorer Foster on the receiving end. Denham put in a peach of a cross and Foster made no mistake heading in from close range.

Saunders had to be alert on 63 minutes to pull off a spectacular save to tip over a long range effort to maintain the slender lead.

Foster thought he’d bagged a brace when he capitalised on a mistake by keeper Clarke who appeared to drop the ball at his feet, however the referee spotted an infringement no one else could see and saved Clarke his blushes.

So at the final whistle we are 90 minutes closer to knowing our destiny this season and the three points mean our destiny is very much in our own hands. Elsewhere all but one of the top eight collected maximum points meaning there is little change at the top.
