Chorley 2-3 Blackburn Rovers 08/08/2012

Wednesday August 8th, 7.30pm
Friendly

CHORLEY completed their home pre-season programme with a narrow defeat against a very strong Blackburn Rovers side.

A very entertaining game with a competitive edge in front of a crowd of 642 on a very sunny evening.

Rovers fielded a very experienced team including Morten Gamst Pedersen, David Dunn, David Goodwillie, Ruben Rochina, Bradley Orr and Grant Hanley but Chorley were in no way overawed and contributed fully to a lively encounter.

The Magpies could easily have been ahead within two minutes when Ciaran Kilheeney dispossessed the under-pressure keeper but with the net gaping the ball ran just too far in front of the striker and a defender was able to boot the ball hastily for a corner.

But the home side did take the lead on 19 minutes from a clever move down the left from which Simon Garner's cross reached Chris Denham who swept the ball past Jake Keane. Then two goals within a minute of each other turned the match Rovers' way.

A clever through ball released Goodwillie who coolly sidestepped Andy Robertson before scoring comfortably.

A classic piece of typical Pedersen opportunism followed almost at once to put Rovers in front.  Robertson raced out to clear but only found Pedersen in the centre circle who spied his chance instantly to plant a perfect shot beyond the stranded keeper and into the net. Quality! HT 1-2.

When David Dunn completed a flowing Blackburn move with a well-placed low cross-shot (52 minutes) it looked all over but the Magpies kept going and Jamie Vermiglio broke through to leave Keane standing with a rising drive which he celebrated as enthusiastically as in a match that really mattered!

Steve Foster had earlier had an excellent header from a Tom Williams centre smartly saved by Keane but the Rovers' keeper saved his best till last.  Matt Jansen made a cameo appearance - to the delight of the visitors' fans - and just before the close hit a thunderous 20-yards' free-kick towards the top corner which Keane brilliantly turned over the bar at full stretch.

Rovers, of course, were themselves close to a further goal or two in the second half as they knocked the ball about swiftly, accurately and impressively but the absorbing contest was finely poised at the whistle and the Chorley performance should give everyone confidence as the serious business approaches
