Chorley 2-0 Grantham Town - 25/08/2012

Saturday August 25th, 3pm

CHORLEY collected three hard earned points following a scintillating second half performance that blew away the previously hard working, uncompromising and tough tackling opponents Grantham Town in the pouring rain at Victory Park

Tom Ince was again the main man, scoring the first and creating the second for Ciaran Kilheeney as the game was effectively won in the opening ten minutes of the second half.

Grantham’s style of play showed why they were reduced to ten men in both their previous games, a defeat on the opening day at FC United and a victory in midweek at home to Stafford Rangers.

They harried and hassled throughout and when tackles were made they were never less than 100% committed. On another day with a referee that might have been less lenient than today’s official they would surely have added to their poor disciplinary record.

Andy Robertson had the quietest day in a Magpies shirt so far as the defensive unit with Tom Walker back in the starting line-up looked as solid as it did last season.

Kilheeney had the best chances of a cagey first half. The first shot was deflected wide after the striker struggled the dig the ball from under his own feet from an Adam Roscoe pass, then he tried the spectacular, but his 30 yarder was probably as wide from the target when it went out of play as it was when it left his foot!

In the final minutes of the half Grantham had their only two attempts, both free free-kicks and neither troubled Robertson.

Between these two chances Ince dribbled into the box and squared to Roscoe, but the difficult chance and was sliced wide.

After the break the game chanced when Steve Foster released Ince who slotted home through the hapless keepers legs to put Chorley in front on 47 minutes, then on 55 minutes it was Ince the provider, putting in a slide rule pass that Kilheeney dispatched into the far corner.

Between the goals Andy Russell and Foster almost added to the score line after a Keiran Walmsley cross.

With the two goal cushion Garry Flitcroft took the opportunity to give Steve Foster, Ciaran Kilheeney and Steve Flitcroft all a rest with Monday’s trip to Marine in mind, bringing on John Cunliffe, Matt Jansen and Dale Whitham on in their places.

Cunliffe could have netted on the break after a Town free-kick was countered at pace, Kilheeney should have crossed to Cunliffe when put through by Ince and Whitham stung the keepers fingers with a typical drive from 18 yards as the Magpies controlled the second period.

At the final whistle a hard fought and well-earned three points were bagged and we can now look forward to a difficult game against a Marine side on Monday that boast one of the leagues 5 remaining 100% records.
