Grantham Town 0-1 Chorley - 27/10/2012

Saturday October 27th, 3pm

CHORLEY returned from their first ever visit to the South Kesteven Sports Stadium with all three points thanks to a Ciaran Kilheeney goal on the stroke of half time.

Following the defeat at Matlock in midweek, manager Garry Flitcroft restored Andy Russell, Dale Whitham, Tom Ince and Ciaran Kilheeney to the starting line-up in an attempt to correct our stuttering form.

The Magpies started brightly with Whitham testing the keeper early on, then at the other end Jack Cudworth was alert to make a fine blocking save.

Home keeper Jimmy Lindley made the save of the day to deny Tom Ince from the edge of the area midway through the half as Chorley controlled the play with the continuous wind at their backs.

The goal came on 44 minutes from a Whitham free-kick 25 yards from goal.  He shaped to play the ball deep into the box, but instead slid the ball along the deck to the near post and Kilheeney diverted the ball around the keeper from the six yard line.

After the interval with the wind in their favour Grantham began a relentless bombardment of the Chorley area.  To their credit the back four and keeper challenged and won almost every ball played at them, while at the other end Kilheeney Adam Roscoe, Tom Ince and Kirk Millar kept the Gingerbreads’ defence busy, with Jamie Vermiglio and Whitham dominating the midfield.

Against the wind clear chances were difficult to create, but Millar headed narrowly over, Kilheeney stung the keepers’ palms and Rosoce couldn’t keep an Ince corner down.

This hard earned and well deserved three points will give the lads confidence for the final of our trio of away games on Tuesday when we travel to face Stafford Rangers.
