Worksop Town 1-0 Chorley - 13/04/2013

Saturday April 13th, 3pm

The Magpies march toward the play-offs took a hefty knock with a last minute Worksop winner.

Leon Mettam’s late winner, a strike that went in off the woodwork, means to be in with a chance of entering the end of season play-offs we now MUST win all four remaining games, especially as Witton Albion and Rushall Olympic both won, the two likeliest side we could catch prior to kick-off.

Things started well, and despite playing against a blustery wind on a rock hard pitch Chorley had early chances to score, Ahmadi Porya twice and Dale Whitham having difficult chances.

After this both sides struggled with the conditions and it wasn’t until later in the half that the next goal chance occurred; Jack Cudworth saving a shot from the edge of the area.

After the break and with the wind at their backs hopes where high, but too often Chorley’s forward ball’s were blown to safety.

Dale Whitham look to certain to score but home James Lindley, making his first appearance of the season, made a fantastic double save to deny Whitham then Andy Russell on the rebound then Paul Jarvis should have done better shortly after when he hit the post after rounding the keeper.

Cudworth cleared his lines well when called into action, with 6’7” giant striker Tom Denton prodiving the aerial threat for the hosts.

Tom Baker, bandaged and stitched-up after receiving a gash to the head early in the first half, was at the heart of almost every Chorley attack, and he went close with a 25 yard drive which Lindley saved.

Cudworth reacted smartly to race out of his box to clear his lines late on as the game looked to be headed for stalemate, but following a Chorley attack breaking down Town hit the Magpies on the break with Mettam netting a minute from the end, sending the sizeable Chorley contingient home deflated.
