The Magpies excellent unbeaten start to the season continued with a comfortable three-nil victory over bottom placed Stafford Rangers in front of a bumper crowd of close to 900 on Non-League Day.
Stafford, to the surprise of many throughout the Evo-Stik League, have had a wretched start to the season losing all their games to date, but throughout a fairly evenly contested opening 45 minutes you would never have guessed their position.
Likewise, Chorley failed to live up to expectations following Tuesday’s remarkable match against Trafford. But most games will fail to match the excitement of that fixture.
The games started with both sides going at 100mph, but neither team getting anywhere fast.
Josh Hine shot over on 20 minutes. Michael Lennon ran across the face of Sam Ashton’s goal on 34 minutes but his shot rolled straight to the Chorley custodian.
Three minutes before the interval Tom Baker, imperious as ever in midfield blasted at goal from 20+ yards, but Jon Brain in the visitors goal kept his eye on the ball and gather it well.
With the break 60 seconds away Dale Whitham go onto the end of a Jake Cottrell first-time cross and his deft flick beat Brain to put the Magpies in front.
The timing of the goal visibly knocked the stuffing out of Stafford and they offered very little in the second period, a worrying trait when you are facing a relegation battle, Chorley meanwhile took advantage of the situation and stamped their authority on the match netting three times in the opening quarter of an hour after the restart, though only two counted!
On fifty minutes Paul Jarvis crossed from the left and Whitham nodded in what he and the Chorley supporters thought was his second only to be denied by an iffy off-side flag; however it wasn’t long before the net was rippling again.
In the 57th minute James Dean, signed in midweek from AFC Fylde and playing in place of injured top scorer Darren Stephenson, broke into the box on the right and riffled a low cross into the box. Cottrell went close to touching home, but the ball flashed inches from his feet, but Jarvis was on hand to net his first goal for the club.
Three minute later it was game set and match when Dean capitalised on a defensive howler to slide the ball into an open goal to mark his signing.
Chorley then cruised to victory with Jarvis and substitute Matt Jansen having chances to extend the lead.
The Magpies now sit second in the league, a point behind Lancashire rivals AFC Fylde, and next face a trip to Derbyshire on Tuesday night to play Matlock Town.
