All good things come to an end eventually, but sometimes that end can be quite cruel and unjust.
After 88 minutes of football where Chorley largely outplayed there hosts, Skelmersdale United’s Alan Burton netted following a goalmouth scramble to steel the points that saw Skem and Chorley swap places in the league.
During the 90 minutes both sides defended resolutely with clear cut chances being at a premium, but Chorley controlled the game and created for more opportunities than their hosts, but if you don’t score you can’t win!
Keiran Walmsley, Adam Mather, Darren Stephenson and Jake Cottrell all had chances early on but ex-Magpies Zac Hibbert was rarely stretched while at the other end ex-Skelmersdale keeper Sam Ashton’s involvement was limited to played as a sweeper!
As the break approached Mather and Stephenson each had another pop while Ashton’s goal was almost threatened by a fizzing shot the flew wide of the angle.
Immediately after the break Chorley saw shouts for a penalty land on deaf ears then Keil O’Brien headed a Tom Baker freekick narrowly over.
Throughout the half the Magpies probed and tested the home defence, but the blue’s back five stood tall to everything thrown at them, hinting that Skem have a touch more steel in their ranks this term than they have in previous years when attacking flair was enough in the First Division North.
Ashton parried as shot from the edge of the area with ten minutes to go, while Hibbert was continually busy with crosses, back passes and generally marshalling his defence to keep the Magpies at bay.
Andy Teague, with what might have been the winner, volley over with minutes to go, then the winner was scored.
Sam Ashton failed bet a clean fist into a corner and as a result the ball dropped into the area. Both sides hacked and whacked at the ball to knock it one was or the other, but it was Burton who got the cleanest strike, smashing home from 7 yards.
With a little over two minutes on the clock there was still time for three more efforts. The tireless James Dean show a shot blocked, Dale Whitham headed just wide from close range and Teague chipped just over the bar… it wasn’t to be!
