The Magpies remain hot on the heels of leaders Skelmersdale United following Boxing Day’s one-nil away victory over Marine.
In what was a very open game, a Paul Jarvis strike just second before the interval was the difference on the score sheet, but in truth Chorley should have won by more.
The defence was as solid as ever and recorded their fifth consecutive clean sheet and the nineteenth so far this season with this latest shut-out.
The midfield trio of Jake Cottrell, Dale Whitham and Paul Woolcott, making a first return to College Road since leaving them to join the Magpies in late October, ran the show while James Dean, Paul Jarvis and the pacey Josh Hine all caused problems for the home defence.
The Mariners has the first chance of the game when Joe Fowler shot with, but Chorley then stepped up the pressure. Keil O’Brien had an effort blocked then immediately after Whitham saw a header cleared off the line.
Hine, whose pace tore holes in the Marine backline, latched onto a Dean flick-on, but his drive went narrowly wide of the far post, then a second attempt was blocked at the near post.
Sam Ashton was called into action midway through the first half, making a full stretch save to deny Fowler.
Whitham and Jarvis both squandered chances as did Matty Devine at the other end, then Dean stretched to make contact with a header, but couldn’t direct the ball beyond Callum Williams in the home goal.
The goal, on the stroke of half time, started with ex-Mariner Woolcott releasing Hine on the right, who beat his man and put a peach of a cross into the box for Jarvis to toe home.
After the break Chorley continued to press with Dean and Jarvis both forcing saves from Williams.
Marine made a double change and edged back into the game, but rarely troubled the Chorley defence.
Dean headed over and Darren Stephenson, on for Hine, made Williams work for his money, while in the final stages Marine almost grabbed a leveller, but Dale Wright’s snap shot from a corner flying high and wide.
