Chorley kicked-off off their Vanarama Conference North campaign with point against fellow new bots Lowestoft Town.
After a delayed kick-off due to visitors getting caught in heavy traffic on the M6 car park, Town went in front with less than a minute on the clock when Shaun Bammant capitalised on a mix-up between Andy Teague and Sam Ashton to net an easy and early opener.
It took the Magpies ten minutes to steady themselves after the early set back but once they did there was only one side in it for long spells however the impressive Ashlee Jones in the Town goal put in one of the best goalkeeping performances for many a year to continually deny the home attack.
Harry Winter, one of three players making their competitive debuts, levelled the score just after the half hour mark. A cross into the box was initially blocked by Jones, but Winter and James Dean showed good persistence to keep trying to stab the ball home in a scramble, with Winter netted at the combined third attempt.
The sides went in at the break level despite a great 25 yard effort from Dale Whitham being well saved by that man Jones.
After the restart Winter shaved the bar with a rasping effort and Whitham was then again denied by Jones.
Ashton had to be alert to punch clear a rare Lowestoft effort then Teague tackled well to break up an attack on the edge of the box.
Dean flicked a long ball on but straight into the arms of Jones who then added Josh Hine to the list of Chorley players he frustrated with another save
However ten minutes from time Chorley finally got the second goal their play deserver when Dean converted from the penalty spot, sending Jones the wrong way after he had been penalised for bringing down Hine inside his box; the Chorley striker was then withdrawn minutes later with a heavy limp.
It looked like Chorley would at least hold onto the lead and if not add to it as Adam Dodd was the next to try his luck after a jinking run across the pitch, but again Jones stood firm.
But with minutes to go Lowestoft reminded everyone that it isn’t over until it’s over, but Ashton was on hand to keep the visitors out, but two minutes into time added on – 91 minutes after their opener - Lowestoft bagged an equaliser when Louis Jefferson converted from close range.
Despite it feeling like two points dropped, if the team continue to perform like this week in week out and as long as the other 20 sides don’t all have goalkeepers who play as well as Ashlee Jones did today then we’ll be alright come the end of the season.
