@ LFA HQ, Leyland

Chorley progressed with relative ease to the final of the Lancashire Challenge Trophy, knocking out North West Counties side Holker Old Boys at the County Ground, Leyland.

Holker, from four divisions further down the non-league pyramid, were never in the game as the Magpies coasted to an easy victory to secure a place in the final on Monday March 16th at the home of Bolton Wanderers, against the winners of next week’s semi-final between Clitheroe and Atherton Collieries.

First half goals from Chris Almond and Jack Lynch plus a second half header form Matthew Flynn were scant reward for a game dominated by the much changed Magpies.

After early pressure Chorley took the lead in the firth minute when Almond tapped in from close range following a header from Flynn.

Jack Dorney was withdrawn midway through the half as a precaution.

Jack Lynch and Harry Winter (twice) both tested Oliver Bell in the Old Boys goal, and Chris Simm should have done the same but his missed his chance.

With the half drawing to a close Lynch looped a superb effort into the top corner off a Mark Ross cross with the pick of the goals.

After the break, and heading down the slope, Chorley continued to dominate, passing the ball well stretching Holker who tired as the game progressed.

Paul Jarvis (three times), Simm, Winter and Cottrell all had chances as the Magpies looked for a third; with the cross bar was still shaking at the final whistle following Winters pile driver!

In the 65th minute, in a rare Holker attack, Bradley Hubbold forced a corner as his show was deflected wide.

Flynn headed in the third with a little over quarter of an hour remaining, converting an excellent Adam Mather delivery from a free-kick.

Aaron Grundy was finally called into action two minutes from time, turning a John-Paul Stanway effort over, meaning his up to then still gleaming yellow keepers top actually looked like it had been on a football pitch!

Starting XI:  Aaron Grundy, Mark Ross, Adam Mather, Andy Teague, Matty Flynn, Jack Lynch, Chris Almond, Jake Cottrell, Chris Simm, Harry Winter, Jack Dorney

Subs: Paul Jarvis (Dorney, 21), James Dean, Dale Whitham, Adam Roscoe, Aaron Burns

Att: 442 Man of the Match: Chris Simm, his effort deserved a goal
