Boston United 2-2 Chorley 02/05/2015

Saturday May 2nd, 3pm
Vanarama Conference North
Play-Off Semi-Final 2nd Leg

Chorley progressed to the final of the Conference North play-offs in the most dramatic fashion; coming from two goals down, equalising deep into time added on, surviving the last ten minutes of extra time with ten men to win following fourteen penalties!

The game will live long in the memory for all who attended, with 319 Magpies making the 300+ mile round trip to deepest Lincolnshire.  Many supporters of a long vintage going as far as saying it’s the best Chorley match they’ve witnessed.

Boston took the lead in the final minutes of the first half when Scott Garner slammed home from close range following Sam Ashton parrying an initial effort from a long throw.

Following the interval Felix Kaneh doubled the advantage.  Poor defending lead the to the goal as there were several chances to clear the danger; these were missed while the shot didn’t!

With the 2800+ home supporters roaring their side on it looked ominous for the Magpies; but if there is one thing anyone should know about a Garry Flitcroft side is they never know when they’re beaten.

It took just seven minutes to reduce the arrears, Chris Doyle netting from a very tight angle following a free-kick to the delight of the supporters behind the goal.

As the game progressed Boston looked to kill as much time as possible, playing the rules to their limit and when the minimum of four minutes to be added was announced it seem like we’d been short changed.

However, an injury in injury time mean this period of play would be extended, and Chorley took full advantage with Adam Roscoe scoring the most incredible equaliser, with a back to goal bicycle kick into the top corner to 12 yards – the goal and the time are beyond description!  Hopefully footage will be available from Boston.

Into extra time and the drama continued.  With all three subs already used those on the pitch had to continue no matter what; how Chris Doyle finished the game is anyone’s guess, he could hardly run or kick the ball, but he managed to head every cross clear.

With ten minutes to go Adam Roscoe’s day ended early as a second yellow card for a tackle on the edge of the area when he ‘took one for the team’ consigned him to the dressing room.

The ten men stood firm. and rode their luck at times, but at the end of 210+ minutes of high drama it was lottery time… penalties!
