Chorley 2-0 Boston United (12/03/2016)

Chorley sent the Pilgrims packing, securing an important 2-0 victory against play-off hopefuls Boston United at Victory Park writes Jack Wynne.

Courtney Meppen-Walter dealt a sucker punch to the away side, firing in from the edge of the area just before half-time.

Darren Stephenson wrapped up all three points for the Magpies with seven minutes of normal time remaining, volleying the ball into the back of the net from six-yards.

Nine minutes played, Dale Whitham’s corner kick from the right almost crept in beneath the underside of the cross bar but Boston goalkeeper Fabian Spiess managed to palm the ball away.

The Pilgrims had their first shot on target on the half-hour mark, Jay Rollins hitting a powerful shot from outside the box, which Sam Ashton brilliantly tipped past the post.

At the other end, Stephenson darted down the right before drilling a cross right along the six-yard box.

Unfortunately, no one in a Chorley shirt was there to latch on the end of it.

Four minutes before the interval, Kiel O’Brien directed a header towards the bottom-right corner after Dale Whitham’s free-kick from distance but Spiess came across and blocked the shot.

Meppen-Walter fired in his first goal for the Magpies, rifling in a shot from the edge of the box a minute before half-time.

Kaine Felix attempted to draw Boston level but his low shot early in the second half from close range was straight at Ashton.

54 minutes played, Meppen-Walter looked to double his tally for the afternoon but his free-kick from outside the box flew straight into the Boston wall.

Andy Teague had a good opportunity to test Spiess, latching onto substitute Adam Roscoe’s headed pass but his header was wide of the target.

Felix’s drilled effort from outside the box was marginally wide of the right-hand post, much to the delight of Ashton.

Ashton made a mesmerizing save to deny Felix’s driven close-range shot which seem destined for the bottom-left corner before the same player rattled the post with a curling effort seconds later.

Stephenson added his name to the scoresheet, volleying home from six yards after Mills had blocked a low shot from him on the line seconds earlier.

Substitute Lewis Hilliard tried to grab a late consolation for the visitors but he rifled the ball straight over the bar from just outside the box.
