FC United of Manchester 2-0 Chorley (26/03/2016)

Saturday March 26th, 3pm

Chorley’s slender hopes of making the play-offs were all but quashed with a 2-0 defeat against FC United of Manchester at Broadhurst Park writes Jack Wynne.

Jerome Wright broke the deadlock early in the second half from the penalty spot before Dale Johnson secured all three points with a powerful effort inside the box in the final few minutes.

Just after a quarter of an hour, Jordan Connerton spurned a good opportunity, heading over the bar from close range after Adam Roscoe’s overhead pass from the right.

Paul Jarvis looked to test Dave Carnell, after coming inside, but his tame shot from outside the box sailed wide of the left-hand post.

Jarvis had another chance to work Carnell three minutes before the interval, his low shot from outside the box heading straight into the hands of the FC United goalkeeper.

At the other end, Wright hit a swerving effort from the edge of the box which just evaded the right-hand post of the Chorley goal.

Two minutes into the second half, Wright fired FC United ahead, converting a penalty after he was brought down by Dale Whitham.

Johnson tried looked to test Sam Ashton, his acrobatic effort from inside the box sailing straight over the bar.

Mark Ross almost turned Wright’s cross from the left into his own net, the ball rattling against the bar just before the hour.

Chorley had an appeal for a penalty waved away in the 68th minute after Darren Stephenson appeared to be pushed from behind by Luke Ashworth.

Cottrell looked to drill a shot at Carnell in the 83rd minute but his effort from inside the box was blocked by Dale Tonge.

Johnson made sure of all three points in the 87th minute, dipping one way and then knocking the ball the other side before arrowing a shot straight past Ashton from inside the box.

Ashton made a fine save to deny Wright, who back heeled the ball towards the bottom corner from inside the box, during the 3rd of ten minutes of stoppage time.
