Chorley 0-4 Rochdale (18/07/2017)

Tuesday July 18th
Pre-season Friendly

After Saturday’s excellent victory over Evo-Stik Division One North side Bamber Bridge it was a chance for the Magpies to go again as they welcomed League One Rochdale to Victory Park on Tuesday night writes Chris Park.

Back for only their second home match this pre-season Matt Jansen named a side where he could find out who deserves a starting spot at Kidderminster in two and half weeks time.

A good start for the home side brought the first chance after just four minutes but an unchallenged header on the edge of the six yard box dipped well over the bar.

The first chance for the visitors came for Steven Davies on 11 minutes when he connected with a cross from the right of the box and Matt Urwin had to tip the shot over his bar.  And he was at it again seven minutes later when he sent a free kick over the goalmouth from 25 yards.

Josh Wilson was able to force a comfortable save from Dale keeper Brad Wade soon after and the visitors saw a speculative effort from Callum Camps drift wide of the mark.

The first goal of the match came ten minutes from the break when Keith Kearney sent a cross into Chorley box which found Davies and his pass was met by A. Trialist who slotted into the bottom corner.

Wilson tried his best to get a leveller before the break but he was denied by three defenders crowding him out as he tried to break free into the penalty box but he eventually succumbed to their presence and lost the ball.

Rochdale had a chance to double their lead right on half time but Camps couldn’t keep his 19-yard free kick down and it sailed safely over Urwin’s crossbar.

Wilson was overly keen to find an equaliser on 48 minutes as he was caught offside but that allowed Rochdale to break up field and only a fumbled save from Urwin at the other end stopped Andy Cannon from doubling Rochdale’s lead.

However, their lead was extended on 52 minutes after some excellent play inside Chorley's area saw another of the trialist grab his second goal of the game, easily converting past a stranded keeper.

Just two minutes after coming on Terry Gornell almost made an immediate impact as he was the first to a looping free kick into the area but his first-time shot hit the post and bounced back out.

And from that rebound, Rochdale were able to work the ball up field again for the trialist to complete his hat-trick when he tapped the ball past Urwin for a 3-0 score line.

With 20 minutes to go fellow substitute Marcus Carver beat the offside trap to turn, beat his man but shot wide of the Rochdale goal.

The home side weren’t giving up despite the three goal deficit and could have reduced that if a shot on 75 minutes hadn’t been straight at the Dale keeper.

And the result got worse for the Magpies as Davies rounded off a routine victory for Rochdale three minutes from time with a close range tap in.
