Chorley 2-3 Bolton Wanderers (08/07/2017)

Saturday July 8th
Pre-season Friendly

Chorley continued their pre-season schedule on Saturday afternoon with an entertaining 3-2 defeat to Championship side Bolton Wanderers writes Harry Lyons.

New summer singing Terry Gornell started up front alongside Marcus Carver and it was the former Accrington Stanley man who broke the deadlock just three minutes into the match. Dale Whitham did well to reach the right hand side byline and simply passed the ball back to Gornell who tapped home from three yards out.

In truth, Bolton rarely threatened in the first half and Chorley looked much the better side. The lead was doubled on twenty minutes thanks to a fantastic individual goal by Marcus Carver.

The striker collected the ball from the half way line and ran at goal, easily going around the experienced David Wheater before slotting under the advancing Bolton goalkeeper, Ben Alnwick.

Chorley’s dominance was to be short lived however, with Andy Teague shown a straight red card by the referee seconds before half time after an off the ball altercation with Bolton’s Gary Madine.

Despite this, a couple of claims for a Bolton penalty in the first half were all the Championship said could muster and Chorley more than deserved their half time lead.

The second half was a completely different game, with Bolton showing their strength by naming a completely different starting XI to the first. Darren Pratley and Josh Vela were just a couple of names to take to the pitch, alongside young centre half Harry Brockbank, who scored two of Bolton's three goals.

The first came just before the hour mark, when Chris Taylor’s whipped free kick was headed home by young Brockbank, who rose above everyone else.

Bolton’s equaliser came ten minutes later when right back Stephen Darby’s shot from the corner of the box was blocked and controlled by academy graduate Ryan White. He swivelled with the ball at his feet and unleashed a powerful drive into the roof of the goal.

The victory was sealed five minutes later when Harry Brockbank scored his second and Bolton’s third in a carbon copy of his first. A free kick was whipped in by Chris Taylor and Brockbank was able to nod home and into the goal.

Chorley introduced a number of trialists into the side throughout the second half, with a view to potentially signing them for the start of the 2017/18 season, which is not just a matter of weeks away.
