Pre-season Friendly

Despite stringing together a host of great chances The Magpies couldn’t gain a foothold in their latest pre-season friendly against Football League opposition.

Blackpool scored 11 minutes before the break through Danny Philliskirk before Mark Cullen scored a brace to seal a 3-0 win for the League One side.

Chorley put out a strong side in their penultimate friendly of the summer against a Blackpool team full of confidence after last season’s Play-off triumph but much of the early play fell to the Tangerines who had their first strike after five minutes.#

Chorley regrouped soon after and Marcus Carver was able to win a corner when his blocked strike went wide of the post.  That corner was comfortably defended by the visitors but in their next move Carver found Terry Gornall but, after he played the ball back to Adam Blakeman for the cross, the ball was just too high for Carver to connect with from eight yards.

With 20 minutes gone, Chorley had another chance from a free kick won to the right of the ‘D’ but Blakeman’s effort was also deflected wide.

Chorley continued their good form throughout the next seven minutes where they created a couple of good chances either side of a Blackpool close-range strike which went over the bar.  First Dale Whitham sent a shot wide before Gornell had a golden chance with a turn and shot which was tipped over the bar by Ben Williams.

But it was the visitors who scored first with an excellent 20 yard strike by Danny Philliskirk which sailed into the top corner past a stranded Matt Urwin after 34 minutes.

Philliskirk was at it again a minute before the break but his second thunderous strike was sent wide.

Two minutes into the second period Blackpool doubled their lead when Mark Cullen scored from close range but since that goal Chorley enjoyed another good spell and were unlucky not to find a goal of their own.

Andy Teague’s effort looked to be blocked with an arm before Stephen Jordan’s header struck a post before Adam Roscoe had a shot saved.  Matt Challinor then sent a couple of searching crosses deep into the box but Carver couldn’t connect with either.

However, on 66 minutes the Tangerines notched their third.  There was a hint of offside for the goal when Cullen collected a through ball and comfortably slipped the ball under Urwin.

The visitors had a big chance to score a fourth goal of the night but substitute keeper Ritchie Branagan produced a fine instinctive save to deny them.

Chorley were desperate to find a consolation from somewhere and it was Carver who had the final strike on goal but the goalie saves and gathers under pressure from Awe.
