Atherton Collieries 2-3 Chorley (13/07/2017)

Thursday July 13th
Pre-season Friendly

Chorley continued their pre-season schedule with a hard fought win against Evo-Stik Division One North new boys Atherton Collieries writes Josh Vosper. The game started in quick fashion as Colls fired wide from an acute angle on seven minutes. It wasn’t long before Jansen’s men found their groove, Wilson just firing wide from a cross by Challoner.

On 18 minutes the hosts took the lead after a mistake at the back which fed the ball to Cover who made no mistake past the young Whittingham. That didn’t deter the Magpies though and five minutes later equalised. After another quick attack Whitham was fouled from just outside the box. The referee gave a free-kick and although Blakeman hit the tatget, the Colls keeper would have been disappointed not to have kept the tame effort out. This sparked Chorley into life and were soon causing all kinds of problems; first from Challoner who hit a grasping shot just over the bar and then Walker who fired just wide of target.

As half time approached Jordan Darr showed blistering pace to beat his defender and was ultimately tripped in the box. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot on 44 minutes as Jason Walker slammed home against the post to re-take the lead. After the break Colls threw caution to the wind in search of an equaliser and they found it on 64 minutes. Once again, a mistake in defence led to the home side taking advantage and making the tie all square yet again. The home side continued to cause problems as shots were testing Whittingham in goal but the youngster stood firm. Atherton would live to regret those missed opportunities as Chorley found the winning goal with ten minutes left on the clock.

Once again, the ever-impressive Adam Blakeman showed skill to find himself on goal, as his pass across the box gave Jason Walker the perfect opportunity to hit his effort into the back of the net. The Magpies controlled the game as time ticked away, retaining possession well, while no clear cut chances were created, Colls looked a strong and powerful side as neither found the goal. As the final whistle blew, Chorley secured a third pre-season win and now look towards their next challenge against old rivals Bamber Bridge on Saturday.
