Match Report - Kidderminster Harriers 0-1 Chorley

Matt Jansen opted to start three of his new signings for this opening game.  Matt Urwin, who signed his loan deal the day before, started in goal whilst Terry Gornell and Josh Wilson both made their full debuts in attack.  Another pre-season capture, youngster Enock Likoy-Elumba, was named on the bench.

The home side started the brightest and thought they had the opening goal on six minutes but Tyrone Williams was adjudged to be offside as he dived to head it past Urwin.

Before that Kidderminster had threatened with an early first minute cross by Daniel Nti turned behind by Josh O’Keefe and five minutes later, the number seven had a shot blocked by Andy Teague.

Chorley finally enjoyed a brief foray into the Kidderminster area, but it was only brief as Wilson was unable to gather Gornell’s swinging cross and the home side cleared.

As the stopwatch struck 20 minutes Marcus Carver couldn’t keep his shot down after collecting a decent ball from O’Keefe before a bit of trickery from the former Accrington Stanley striker allowed him to break into the box but Gornell skied the sideways pass over the bar.

With 28 minutes gone Gornell came from nowhere to get his head to Adam Blakeman’s ball over the Kidderminster defence but sent his header wide from 16 yards.  Two minutes later Joe Ironside headed over for Harriers.

As the half entered its last ten minutes O’Keefe won a corner as his shot from outside the box was tipped away by Brandon Hall.  Blakeman whipped it across the face of the goal but it was a Harriers player who got there first and cleared the danger.

The hosts stepped up a gear in the final five minutes and their best chances came from a Liam Daly header which went narrowly wide, and Manny Sonupe’s shot, which Ironside got a toe too, but Urwin watched it all the way to gather.

A poor corner from Blakeman and touch from Matt Challinor at the start of the second half allowed Kidderminster’s Sonupe to break and only a last minute clearance from Scott Leather denied the home side a goal.

Kidderminster should have scored on 60 minutes when Ironside met a good cross 12 yards out but Urwin produced a super diving save to his left to deny the home striker.  And soon after Carver almost opened Chorley’s account but his shot was blocked and sent for a corner.

With 65 minutes on the clock, the Magpies scuppered a golden chance to take the lead as Carver broke and crossed for Gornell who only had to guide it past Hall into the net but his header was straight at him from close range.

Kidderminster enjoyed a couple of chances with 20 minutes left on the clock.  Ryan Croasdale had the first attempt a strike on goal but the defender’s long range effort was high and wide before Elton Ngwatala’s header went inches wide of the post.

But it was Chorley who broke the deadlock on 79 minutes.  Some good pressure led to a couple of corners and the latest was turned in by Tyrone Williams past his own keeper much to the delight of the 130 travelling fans.

Four minutes later O’Keefe looked to double that lead but couldn’t keep his shot down after Challiner intercepted a wayward pass and broke forward into home penalty box to lay him off.

The Harriers were desperate to find an equaliser in the last few minutes and Andre Brown couldn’t find the target from six yards, sending his first time shot inches wide.  And they  home side had the last chance of the game but Liam Truslove’s free kick was deflected over deep into injury time.

An excellent start to the season for Janny and his players and they’ll hope to build on that next Tuesday evening when they host Salford City at Victory Park.
