Report | Chorley 0 Salford City 1

A first half strike from midfield Michael Nottingham ensure Salford City took home all three points in another tight game for the Magpies.

Matt Jansen opted to stick with the same starting 11 that beat Kidderminster the previous Saturday for this opening home match of the season.  Jake Cottrell was the only change to the side that beat the Harriers, coming onto the bench for Adam Roscoe.

Salford enjoyed the first chance of the match on seven minutes when Ritchie Allen was brought down on the edge of the Chorley box.  Ibou Touray’s strike was punched away by Matt Urwin, making his home debut, before Michael Phenix’s strike bounced inches wide of the post.

Urwin was up to the task again on 18 minutes when he plucked a decent cross out of the air with Phenix ready to pounce on any fumble but his hands remained strong.

Chorley grew into this game and were enjoying some good possession by the middle of the half.  Andy Teague’s header to the right of the goal was comfortably gathered by Maxime Crocombe before Dale Whitham’s thunderous strike sailed just over the bar.

After a brief lull in the action, Chorley had the next chance on goal after 30 minutes.  This one was on target from Whitham but his soft shot was directly at the keeper.

Salford snatched the lead though on 36 minutes after some repeat pressure inside Chorley’s area allowed Michael Nottingham a cross before the ball rebounded back into his path and his deflected strike beat the stranded Urwin.

Just before the break Carver missed a golden chance as Carl Piergianni miss-judged his header and almost laid the Chorley attacked off but a poor first touch sent the ball away from him and out of play.

And as the clock ticked into stoppage time the Salford defence seemed to fall apart but the scrambled efforts from the home side couldn’t find the target.

The second period began well for Chorley and on 52 minutes a decent pass was sent through to Carver but he was beaten to the ball by Crocombe on the edge of the area and the Salford stopper cleared the danger.

As the hour mark beckoned Chorley enjoyed a decent spell which ended in a great chance for Matt Challoner.  A free kick was awarded to the right of the goal and played back to the edge of the area but the fullback shot over.

Soon after Salford almost grabbed a second goal with a great strike that sailed wide of the mark but Chorley were given a lifeline with a quarter of an hour remaining.  Substitute Joshua Askew flew in dangerously with two feet on Andy Teague and was shown a straight red card much to the delight of the Chorley crowd.

Another chance fell for Salford's Nottingham but he couldn't keep his shot down when he was free in space and Chorley had a big shout for hand ball on 86 minutes from Josh Wilson’s strike but the referee deemed the block legal.

As the game entered the final few minutes it was a frantic spell for the home side as they tried in vain to find an equaliser.  The closed they came was Josh O’Keefe’s header which was sent agonisingly wide.
