A breezy Sunday afternoon at Edge Hill University was the setting for this top of the table clash as leaders Chorley FC travelled to St Helens.
As the game kicked off you could see both teams where very nervous as the play was rather scrappy for the first 10 minutes with neither team wanting to make a mistake and each appearing to favour the long ball approach.
As he half went on gaps started to appear in play and the advantage switching from team to team, Chorley where the first to get a shot off each of the front three had opportunities but all went either wide or high. St Helens then started to push forward with much the same result as neither keeper was really tested.
This seemed to be the pattern for the remainder of the first half as they went in at half time 0-0
Into the second half and both teams came out all guns blazing, attacking from deep but this time passing the ball around a lot more. St Helens had a good opportunity to take the lead but Luke Rigby in goal pushed an effort around the post. It was then Chorley who went on the offensive with Kelsall being denied by a good save from the St Helens Keeper.
Finally Jordan Darr was put through on goal after a good passage of passing football and neatly put the ball past the onrushing keeper. This goal seemed to settle the Chorley lads down as the flowing passing moves we have seen all season starting to re-emerge. Captain Alex Green stung the keepers hands with a long range effort before Danny Simm, Lewis Kelsall and Jordan Darr once again came close to adding to the score line. In addition to this Nathan Young and Tashan Morris had good efforts blocked before a good move down the left hand side brought in a cross which Tom Charnley headed home to double the young magpies lead.
The second goal didn’t deter the St Helens team though as they continued to press for a goal which left them sometimes exposed at the back but Chorley unfortunately were not able to capatilise on this.
The game ended 2-0 to Chorley and they extended their lead at the top of the table to 7 points.
