THE Magpies are back on home soil to bring in the New Year after the Boxing Day half-time abandonment at Radcliffe on Boxing Day.

Making the journey up to Lancashire for this midweek clash are fifth-place Buxton after their home victory against Alfreton Town last time out.

The Opponents

Buxton have been on a good run lately, with only one defeat in their last five games. The Bucks will be feeling confident on their trip to the Grant Store Victory Park Stadium.

Following their most recent victory against Alfreton Town last Thursday in a tight 3-2 victory at home, John McGrath and his players will know what it takes to come from behind and win a cagey affair.

Connor Kirby is the club's top goalscorer so far this season on seven, with the midfielder being closely followed by winger Tom Elliot on six.

Fullback and former Magpie, Josh Popoola is leading the way on the assists tally with six so far, and close behind on five is Kirby.

The midfielder is having an impressive season so far, and with a combined 12 goals and assists, Kirby will undoubtedly be one to watch.

The Manager

John McGrath is the manager and has only been in charge since May of this year after being in charge of Mickleover Sports.

The former Republic of Ireland under-21s international only recently entered management after retiring from playing in the 2022/23 season.

Having come through the Aston Villa academy, McGrath went on to play for clubs such as Doncaster Rovers, Shrewsbury Town, Kidderminster Harriers, Tamworth, Burton Albion, and others.

So far this season, the 44-year-old is doing a fine job.

Looking back at last season, when Buxton finished 14th, it's impressive to see the work that the Irishman and his staff have been able to do so far.

However, Chorley will be looking to climb back above the visitors this Wednesday and resecure fifth place.

A word from Preecy

“It’ll be a really tricky game when we welcome Buxton on New Year’s Day. Buxton have been doing brilliantly since going full-time and we’ll have to be at our best to get the right result here.”
