FOLLOWING a third draw in a row in a matter of days, Chorley now turn their attention to local rivals Southport this weekend.

The last time the Magpies faced the Sandgrounders was back in August when Chorley came out on top in a 4-1 victory at the Grant Store Victory Park Stadium.

Mark Ellis grabbed a brace, while a recent centurion also got in on the act and scored in the 94th minute in Scott Wilson. Mike Calveley was also amongst the goals and will be looking to score again after coming so close on Tuesday.

The Opponents

Southport have had one win in their last five league games, with their win coming at home against Warrington Town.

The Sandgrounders also recently saw their exit from the FA Vase Trophy following a 1-0 defeat against Southend United.

Striker, Danny Lloyd is the club's top goalscorer this season with an impressive nine.

Lloyd's last goal came away at Hereford, where the forward would do enough to secure a point on the road.

As for the people creating all these chances for the centre-forward, former Magpie, Marcus Carver is so far on five and Lloyd is close behind on four.

The 33-year-old will likely be the one to look out for this weekend.

Southport have a rich history, reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals in 1930, where they would lose 9-1 to Everton.

However, just a year later, the club recorded its record attendance when 20,000 people watched them play Newcastle in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

In 1998, Southport made its first and only trip to Wembley when they lost 1-0 to Cheltenham Town in the FA Trophy final.

More recently, though, they have reached the Lancashire Challenge Trophy final and have won it back-to-back in the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons.

The Manager

Jim Bentley took over Southport back in August after having stints in charge of clubs such as Rochdale, AFC Fylde and Morecambe.

Bentley started his managerial career at Morecambe, where he was in charge from 2011 to 2019.

Furthermore, the former center-back only played for two clubs in his career.

He started at Telford United, where he stayed for five years before moving to Morecambe, where he made over 292 appearances for the club and scored 29 goals.

A word from Preecy

“We all know what it’s like against Southport, it’s a Derby Day, anything can happen, we weren’t at the races on Tuesday, which was disappointing. We’ll have to be at the levels we were against Scunthorpe United, if not better, we’re right up for it and looking to give it a right old go here in what will be a proper battle.”
