FROM climbing to the top of the Vanarama National League North table, now the Magpies look ahead to get one over on Marine AFC in the Isuzu FA Trophy as the Magpies this Saturday.
The Opponents
Not much has changed for the visitors for this weekend’s clash, losing two games back-to-back following their 3-0 home win against Andy Preece’s side a few weeks ago.
Marine have climbed to 22nd in the Vanarama National League North with two wins, four draws and seven defeats.
After their play-off final win against Macclesfield last season, the Mariners earned promotion but have struggled in the division.
The club's top goal scorers are now both Enock Lusiama and former Magpie, Bradley Holmes, who have two goals apiece so far.
Lusiama got both of his goals against Chorley so he will certainly be one to watch for our visitors on Saturday.
Winless in their last two games, Marine will be looking to put things right with another win against the Magpies, this time away from home.
The Manager
Neil Young is the manager, and Young has a very impressive CV, having earned seven promotions, including three consecutive League Championships at Chester FC and now two with Marine.
He joined Cammell Laird as Joint Manager in 2007, and the team was promoted to the Northern Premier League Premier Division as runners-up.
Having been appointed as the new manager of the reformed Chester in 2010. Young went on to record an unprecedented triple promotion, winning the NPL North, NPL Premier and Conference North in consecutive seasons, breaking various records on the way. Young was also given the Conference North Manager of the Year in 2013.
The 49-year-old coach then joined Marine in September 2018 and led the club to the FA Cup 3rd Round in 2022. While also recently earning promotion to the National League North.
A word from Preecy
“Another test to come this weekend at home as we take on Marine, Neil, as we know, has built upon their promotion success of last season and we were dealt the full effect of that only recently when we lost. This game is one that takes us away from the league and will likely give an opportunity to some of our younger players to get some valuable minutes.”
