THE Magpies began their pre-season schedule with a 3-0 defeat to Garstang, on a sodden evening at The Riverside.

There were plenty of bright moments for what was a young Chorley squad on duty. Notable inclusions were new signing Jack Hazlehurst, who enjoyed a rough 45 minutes as he weaved in and out of tackles, while creating a couple of chances for himself inside the Garstang box. Justin Johnson in first half action (David Airey)

Fellow first teamers Justin Johnson and Harry Scarborough looked lively in what were difficult conditions considering the time of year, as the rain poured down for the majority of the game.

Harrison Kay and Daniel Price-Jordan were also in the thick of the action – the pair relatively new to the first team setup having signed contracts off the club’s Education Programme last month.

There’s was time for a number of our other young lads to get in on the action as well, and despite the hosts adding two second half tallies to their first half opener, the gaffer wasn’t downhearted with the workout.

It was a good learning curve for our young lads. That’s why we schedule in these games as part of pre-season, to give different opportunities to some of our players. They’ll have learnt a lot from tonight that they can take away, think about and improve. No doubt about it – Andy Preece
